"Have a Nizzze Day"
This was my entry for the 2015 Bee Sculpture contest. Another message warning of the consequences of continued pesticide use that leads to the extermination of the honey bee. The distressed door is symbolic of coming and going.
I came in 3rd again! Will be happy to see this sculpture installed somewhere on the streets of Beeton.
The new Spring line-up of classes will start the week of May 16, 2015. See Art Classes page for Schedule.
My controversial entry (according to the local papers) in the Great Big Beeton Bee Contest is now in its permanent home in a flower bed next to the Muddy Waters Hotel on the main street of Beeton, On. The prize money ($500) is generously donated by the Beeton Tottenham Business Improvement Assoc. during the installation ceremony. If you are ever passing through, stop by the Muddy Waters Hotel parking lot where you can take a selfie with my now famous bee. I like the fact that it is a constant reminder of the dangers (world-wide) of pesticide use. Hopefully Canada will follow Europe and ban Neonicotinoids.
I was inspired to create "Pesticide Solution" after reading about the death of thousands of Honey Bees in the "Voice of the Farmer" paper. Neonicotinoid used to treat corn and soybean seeds is the pesticide responsible. The dust drifts off planting equipment poisoning the pollen that bees collect. This is happening right now during spring planting and hundreds of hives will not survive. I hope to raise awareness to this crisis during the Beeton Honey Festival when hundreds of visitors will view the outdoor sculpture entries . The winner is judged by public vote. Come out and vote for my bee if you feel it is worthy!
After an enjoyable and busy winter semester teaching at George Brown College School of Design in Toronto, I am now gearing up for an equally enjoyable and busy season.
My next adventures include: Beeton Honey Festival, Saturday May 24, 2014. I am coordinating the artist exhibits in front of the Library, as well, I will have my latest work on display. Also I plan to enter my outdoor sculpture into the Great Big Beeton Bee contest. (See last year's entry above). Not too sure what the new sculpture will look like this year, but I'm not unveiling it until the contest commences!
I'll be competing in the Battle of the Brushes again. This exciting event takes place on Saturday June 07, 2014 as part of the Arts Festival in Alliston. Please come out and join in the fun, and vote for me if you think my paintings are worthy!
Also, art classes here at Worthy Art Studio get under way on Monday May 05, 2014.
I'll be keeping busy by catching up on several commissioned portraits, designing the new Royal Winter Fair poster and re-designing the logo and exhibition booth panels for Ontario Sawdust supplies.
Not to mention a summer of riding and horse shows and gardening. I think that rounds it out for now. Hope to see you out there!

Living Willow Sculpture
This is my interpretation of a honey bee for the outdoor sculpture contest at the Beeton Honey Festival on May 25th 2013. It's constructed of willow harvested from a 35' willow tree I planted from a cutting 17 years ago. This is a "green" project and it's designed to be transplanted into a flower bed where it will continue to grow and the roots will anchor it to the ground. Like any ornamental shrub it's unique shape can be maintained with regular pruning. You don't want a 35' bee!
Commission inquiries are welcome.

Here I am ready to compete in the 2nd annual Battle of the Brushes. Over 40 artists took part in this fun competition. You are given a 24 x 20 canvas, 3 primary colours plus black/white acrylic paint, no reference (only imagination and memory) and 20 minutes to create a masterpiece! Oh, and the public audience votes for the winners. First prize was $500, 2nd was $250.
I progressed to the final round of 4 artists, and finished a respectable 3rd place. Just out of the money, but a worthwhile experience overall.
All canvases were sold in a silent auction with proceeds going to The South Simcoe Arts Council in Alliston, On.
Had a wonderful day displaying my work at the Honey Festival. Great to meet so many new art lovers and mingle with old friends.

The South Simcoe Arts Council has awarded my entry into it's annual Arts Festival juried competition First Prize in the Two Dimensional Art category. My work was judged in the "Art on Main" event during the month of May. Artist and stores are partnered together along main streets in the towns of Aiiliston, Cookstown, Beeton and Tottenham. My work was displayed in the store front window of Will Silks General Store in Cookstown. During the guided Art Walk I also gave a live painting demonstration and answered questions about my work. Thanks to Laurie, proprietor of Will Silks, for donating a beautiful venue in her antique shop to display my paintings and to the Arts Council for their support of the arts in New Tecumseth as well as the Rotary Club of Alliston for their donation of my award.
My student Miguel Chavez in the Portfolio Development course at Humber College has just been accepted to the Ontario College of Art & Design, McMaster University and University of Victoria, B.C.
